Indications and Prescribability
METABOLIC MINERAL MIXTURE can be used as a supply of minerals and trace elements in the dietary management of inborn errors of amino acid metabolism (e.g. phenylktonuria, maple syrup urine disease, homocystinuria, tyrosinaemia, etc.). It can also be used as the mineral component of synthetic/artificial diets (e.g. tube feeds).
Suggested Intake
The recommended daily intake of METABOLIC MINERAL MIXTURE is 1.5g/kg bodyweight for infants up to 5.5kg. Above this weight, until 3 years of age, 8g/day is given. For older children and adults it is recommended that 12g/day is given depending on age. The recommended dosage may need lowering if vitamins and minerals are provided in the diet from other sources.
Preparation & Administration
Prepare a drink or paste of the required diet together with the required amount of METABOLIC MINERAL MIXTURE. The drink or paste may be prepared with warm water, oil, emulsion, sugar or carbohydrate or other products from the SHS range.
The drink or paste should be divided into three equal portions and taken with the main meals of the day. Water or fruit juice should be taken at the same time.
The preparation may require further dilution until osmotic tolerance is achieved.
Due to its osmotic effects, it is suggested that METABOLIC MINERAL MIXTURE is further diluted when given to infants.
Precautions
If METABOLIC MINERAL MIXTURE is inadequately diluted, symptoms of hyperosmolality may occur and the serum electrolytes should be checked. Treatment is by administration of the fluid orally, or via enteral nutrition.
Must only be used under strict medical supervision. Not intended for use as the sole source of nutrition. Not for parenteral use.
Precautions
Store in a cool, dry place.
Once reconstituted, the prepared feed should be stored in a refrigerator and must not be kept longer than 24 hours from the time of preparation. Stir or shake mixture before serving.
